Litter Traps

We developed passive Litter Traps to retrieve floating plastic in ports, rivers and harbors, before it enters seas and oceans. The Litter Traps effectively retrieve marine litter without using any energy. Changing weather conditions like wind and stream direction have no negative impact on the entrapment system. The system is strong and sturdy to resist tough harbor conditions. The system is mainly constructed from recycled plastic, making it a durable and circular product.

 

We’re currently developing more versions of the Litter Traps; traps with a larger capacity for the marine litter, in order to be emptied less frequently, and a modular Litter Trap that can easily be transported globally, for the worldwide approach to prevent floating plastics from entering seas and oceans.

Brussels, Belgium

Together with the Audi Environmental Foundation, we successfully  installed a Litter Trap in the harbor basin of Brussels after a positive test phase. The Litter Trap is emptied twice a week and the average amount of waste collected is 1.5 cubic meter per month.

It is located in 6 Place des Armateurs, 1000 Brussels.

Rotterdam, Netherlands

In Rotterdam, we developed three passive Litter Traps to efficiently retrieve the plastics from the New Meuse (Nieuwe Maas). During a trial period of 1,5 years, the Litter Traps are tested, monitored and optimized. This resulted in a successfully working system.

Ambon, Indonesia

Indonesia has the world’s second biggest share in mismanaged plastic waste. 80% of ocean plastic pollution comes from land sources, due to inadequately disposed waste. This includes disposal in dumps or open, uncontrolled landfills. The waste enters the ocean via rivers, wastewater outflows or wind. In 2017, we started our first project, to install passive Litter Traps at river mouths and other highly polluted waters. Together with local organizations we made three Litter Traps from low budget, re-using local materials.
